Veliky Novgorod is a guardian of cultural traditions.

A folk music theater "Krugovina" of City Cultural Center named after N. Vasiliev was awarded a Grand Prix certificate in the Interregional Festival-Contest of Ditties and Folk Traditional Instrumental Music "In the Old Days It Used to Be..." (Leningrad region).

The first three places in the Fourth International Dance Contest "CREATORS AND GUARDIANCS" were given to the members of a dance club "Kapriz" of Novgorod City Center of Culture and Youth "GOROD". A choreography studio "Kaleidoskop" of Novgorod City Center of Culture and Youth “GOROD” won the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd prizes (Saint-Petersburg).

A folk amateur group "The applied arts studio Novgorodskaya Beresta" of Novgorod City Center of Culture and Youth "GOROD" was the first in the Second International Festival of Folk Crafts "Voice of crafts" (Vologda).


Brand Veliky Novgorod – the Birthplace of Russia is the laureate of the contest of the best tourist brands of Russia Gold Brand in the nomination Gold Land

From May 18 to May 20, 2012 in Moscow the contest Gold Brand took place as a part of International Tourist Exhibition MITF-2012, the aim of this contest was to reveal the most interesting projects of promotion of tourist products and territories of Russia.

In the nomination Gold Land the project Veliky Novgorod – the Birthplace of Russia was presented by Red Izba Tourism Development Centre. The title of contest’s laureate was conferred to the project Veliky Novgorod – the Birthplace of Russia by a decision of a reputable jury consisting of Russian and Foreign experts in the field of tourism. 

The Best Information Tourist Website about the Region of Russia

Tourist Information Portal of Novgorod region VisitNovgorod became the winner of annual award Star of in the nomination the Best Information Tourist Website about the Region of Russia by results of online poll of tourists and travellers (in 2009 and in 2012).

Veliky Novgorod is the National Competition Winner to the title the Most Comfortable Urban (Country) Settlement of Russia according to the results of 2010 in the category of Cities are administrative centres of constituent territories of the Russian Federation.

National professional public award Golden Capital of Russia is the public award which outstanding persons, teams of enterprises, insitutions and organizations are rewarded for the contribution to development and adoption of modern technologies in the field of construction, architecture, housing and public utilities, financing and insurance of branch projects, sectoral science and education.

Ceremonial award presentation took place on November 25, 2011  in Ministry for Regional Development of the Russian Federation in Moscow.

Novgorod Kremlin Park is the best amusement park in Russia.

The Novgorod Kremlin Park became the winner of the review competition Crystal Wheel in the category of The Best Amusement Park with visitors' number from 100 thousand to 250 thousand persons a year. The review competition is annually held among Culture and Rest Parks of Russia and CIS countries.

The aim of the review competition is revelation and expansion of the best positive experience of various trends of park activity and high standards of provided services’ quality in the field of rest and family entertainment.

For 8 years of the competition Crystal Wheel more than 200 organisations and institutions took part in this competition, of which 91 became winners.

The competition geography grows year by year: Belarus, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia and all Federal Districts of the Russian Federation.

Veliky Novgorod is one of the best cities of Russia

According to Russian cities’ top list of quility of life Top-100 of the best cities of Russia, which the magazine Kommersant made up, Veliky Novgorod takes up a leading position among regional centres of North-West.

Veliky Novgorod has the 15th position from 164 Russian municipal districts with a population from 100 thousand persons (Moscow and St.Petersburg didn’t take part in the top list). For example, Vologda is on the 42nd position, Pskov has 47th position, Petrozavodsk has 78th position.

Population number, their purchasing power, independence of municipal budget and expenditure per capita following the results of 2010 and other rates were considered in drawing up the list.

Veliky Novgorod is in favor of healthy lifestyle

Veliky Novgorod obtained special award for considerable contribution against drugs distribution, the organisation of healthy urban environment and popularization of healthy lifestyle’s complex work, by the decision of noncommercial association European Cities Against Drugs (ECAD).

In 2010 253 european cities contended for getting such an award. Veliky Novgorod became the first Russian city, that received the highest mark of ECAD.

Veliky Novgorod is Spartakiad’s winner of Union of Central and North-West Cities of Russia

Veliky Novgorod’s team twice became the winner of Spartakiad of the Union of Central and North-West Cities of Russia (in 2009 and in 2000) and six times it became a prize-winner.

The strongest sportsmen including prize-winners of the Olympic Games, Honoured Masters of Sports, international masters of sports take part in Spartakiad.

In competitive sports teams of masters and participants of super-league compete for victory.

Spartakiad takes place annually in one of cities which are part of the Union of central and North-West cities of Russia.

In 2012, the year of the 1150 anniversary of Russian Statehood, Spartakiad was held in Veliky Novgorod the third time.

Veliky Novgorod is the City of Military Glory

On October 28, 2008 President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev signed the Decree about conferment of honorary title of the Russian Federation the City of Military Glory to Veliky Novgorod.

It is said in the Decree: honorary title of the Russian Federation the City of Military Glory will confer to Veliky Novgorod for courage, determination and mass heroism, that defenders of the city showed in fight for liberty and independence of the Motherland.

On December 8, 2008 the grand ceremony of document’s handing of President of the Russian Federation about conferment of honorary title of the RF the City of Military Glory to Veliky Novgorod took place.

The Novgorod Kremlin and the Cathedral of St. Sophia are among winners of the project Seven Wonders of Russia.

During the year the magazine correspondents have been travelling around the city-nominees applying for entry in the list of winners.

Out of 21 cities that passed preselection only seven were to become new wonders of Russia. 

The main aim of the action is the revival of public interest in the Russian attractions and activation of domestic tourism. 

Novgorod Prince Alexander Nevsky is the symbolic figure in the history of state

Novgorod Prince Alexander Nevsky became the winner of popular vote of TV project Name of Russia according to the results of 2008.

During 7 months the country has been choosing the most symbolic figure in the history of the state and as a result Russian people gave more than 520 thousand votes in favor of the Great Prince Alexander Nevsky. Novgorod people actively supported Alexander Nevsky, whose name is closely connected with centuries-old history of the city.

Every year near the monument to the great commander festive events are held to mark the Day of military glory - the anniversary of the victory on Lake Peipsi.

The order of Alexander Nevsky, established in the hardest period of the Great Patriotic War in summer of 1942, means special honor and respect for soldiers.

Three veterans who were awarded the high distinction Ivanov Sergei Ivanovich, Popov Alexander Petrovich and Filimonenko Vasily Aleksandrovich live in Veliky Novgorod.

Since 2008 Veliky Novgorod has been bearing the honorary degree the City of Military Glory.

Veliky Novgorod is the best city by economical performances

Veliky Novgorod three times won National competition of financial development of economy of Russia Golden Rouble by economical performances of financial development in the category of «capital» in the Northwestern Federal District. 

The organizer of this noncommercial project of federal standard, propagandizing positive economical and investment image of Russia, is non-profit organization National Corporation of Economic Development with the support of Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the RF, Government of the RF, a number of ministries and departments.

The purpose of the competition is to assist further rise of image of Russia on Russian and international standard, to demonstrate potentialities of economic development of the Russian Federation in all varieties of its regional resources to general public of Russia and foreign states.
