On the 8th January 2020, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the Novgorod Regional House for Folk Art will hold the regional winter event Christmas holidays in Vitoslavitsy at the Museum of Wooden Architecture Vitoslavitsy. You can get to the Museum on buses №7 or 7A which both leave from the central bus station.

Scheduled activities include:

  • A walk for the village streets with the folk groups from Novgorod Oblast and Velikiy Novgorod;
  • Christmas rituals: tradional music, caroling, fortune telling, clown shows and games;
  • traditional games:
  • horseback riding;
  • workshops: how to make a doll, weaving and arts & crafts.

The cheerful bells of the Kashira chapel will be ringing to announce the beginning of celebrations with the traditional Christmas rite that waves goodbye to the old year. Adults and children will walk along the villages streets holding Christmas stars, celebrating Christ and the Koliada, an ancient winter ritual now incorporated into Christmas. They will stop at every house and sing Christmas carols to the owner in return for a treat. The best folk groups from the region and Veliky Novgorod itself will perform traditional dances and songs with visitors. Costumed actors will begin their amazing performances and clownish games. Then, the most mysterious and long-awaited event of the celebrations will take place: fortune telling. Those interested will be told their fortunes about love and future life.

Those who prefer outdoor activities will be given the opportunity to take part in traditional games: country football, competitions, tug-of-war and many others. By participating in the games you will earn “Christmas money”, with which you will be able to buy small gifts in the prize-shop.

Indeed, children will love the horse riding and the show of the Teatra Petrushki (Petrushka theatre). You can treat yourself with the wonderful souvenirs in the craft market, where craftsmen from all over the region will tempt you with their fine products. Celebrations end with the stunning “pokhorony Dudarya” (“Dudar’ ‘s funeral”).
