The exhibition called “Reborn from the Ruins. Church of Saviour's Transfiguration on Kovalevo Field and its frescoes” was opened in the Church of St George In The Marketplace in 2012. It displays frescoes from the Church of Saviour's Transfiguration on Kovalevo Field that were thought to be lost in the ruins of the church destroyed during the Great Patriotic War but later were collected according to the unique method invented by A. and V. Grekovs and mounted on titanium shields.

After the war the decision was made to try to save at least some of the frescoes’ fragments buried in the ruins. Within 2 years Valentina Grekova, worker of the Central Scientific Restoration Workshop, collected archive materials and determined the main technological methods.

In 1965 under the guidance of restoration artist Alexander Grekov the crew of the workshop started works that are still in action. The ruins dismantling method that helps restore destroyed images by picking scattered fragments was invented and applied in their course. The assembled frescoes are mounted on the special titanium shields made according to the Grekovs’ project. The images that are completely assembled and mounted are displayed in the exhibition. About 200 square meters of frescoes are still in the process of being reborn from the ruins.
